Snow Kiting

As we headed up the chair lift to the top of Super-Morzine we began to feel a gentle breeze. Nothing particularly strong, and not continuous but more like breathing. Foehn! True to yesterday’s “joke” I took Sjek off-piste. Just a short way off Seraussaix which we could have walked, but it’s much easier to move in deep powder on skis than in shoes. A short distance from the Alpage de Seraussaix we planted our skis and Sjek prepared her kite.

I could see the thrill of the sport when it was described to me by an enthusiast in Cambridge, but actually having the opportunity to try it out was quite different; and quite a kick! The wind was blowing the wrong way for us to have a try at skiing and kiting at the same time, but we nonetheless skated in our ski boots as the wind picked up and pulled us along. Some more practice is clearly called for. Next year, perhaps, we shall do it “for real” — assuming we’re not banned from the pistes altogether!
